About Nephrite Jade
Nephrite is one of the two mineral materials traditionally recognized as true jade—the other being jadeite.
Nephrite is composed primarily of tightly interlocking amphibole minerals, principally tremolite-actinolite. This fibrous, interlocking structure gives nephrite exceptional toughness, which is one reason it has historically been prized for carving.
Mohs Hardness: Approximately 6–6.5
Although nephrite is not among the hardest gemstones by Mohs hardness, it is exceptionally tough and resistant to breakage because of its interlocking mineral structure.
That combination has made nephrite a favored material for sculptures, ornaments, jewelry, ceremonial objects and decorative carvings for thousands of years.
