🌈 Rainbow Obsidian Spheres
🌈 Natural Rainbow Obsidian Spheres
Hand-Polished Mexican Volcanic Glass • Purple, Green & Multicolor Rainbow Sheen • Choose Your Exact Sphere
These Natural Rainbow Obsidian Spheres are striking collector pieces featuring a glossy, near-mirror black surface that reveals beautiful layers of purple, violet, green, blue-green and subtle multicolor sheen when viewed under direct light.
Unlike artificially coated stones, genuine Rainbow Obsidian gets its optical effect from microscopic inclusions and internal layering within the volcanic glass. When the sphere is rotated under a strong light source, these layers can appear as glowing rings, eyes, halos, or sweeping bands of color. Rainbow Obsidian is particularly associated commercially with deposits in Mexico, especially Jalisco.
The photographs show that these pieces have especially attractive purple/violet sheen, with several spheres displaying green, teal, blue, and concentric rainbow effects.

🌋 What Creates the Rainbow?
Rainbow Obsidian forms when silica-rich volcanic lava cools rapidly, creating natural volcanic glass. Its rainbow appearance is associated with microscopic inclusions—particularly magnetite nanoparticles—arranged in layers within the glass. Light interacting with these layers creates the characteristic iridescent sheen.
The rainbow is often not equally visible from every angle. Direct sunlight, a flashlight, or another concentrated light source typically produces the strongest effect.
🔮 INDIVIDUAL SPHERE HIGHLIGHTS
Option A — 137.91 g • 47.98 mm
A beautiful smaller sphere with a deep violet center and softly radiating purple layers. Its darker outer edge creates excellent contrast when the internal sheen catches the light.

A moodier specimen displaying dark plum, smoky violet and subtle purple layering. This piece has a more understated rainbow effect that emerges as the sphere is rotated.
Option C — 145.09 g • 48.80 mm
Features a concentrated purple-violet eye surrounded by glossy black obsidian. The circular central coloration gives it a classic Rainbow Obsidian appearance.
Option D — 166.52 g • 51.14 mm
A larger sphere with a smoky plum-purple center and softer layered coloration. Beautiful for customers who prefer darker, more mysterious Rainbow Obsidian.
Option E — 162.93 g • 50.75 mm
Displays a particularly attractive bright purple/violet center surrounded by darker black glass. The sheen becomes considerably more pronounced under concentrated light.
Option F — 163.66 g • 50.71 mm
One of the standout pieces of the collection. This sphere shows green, teal, blue and subtle violet concentric bands, producing a true multicolor rainbow-eye appearance.
Option G — 188.54 g • 53.41 mm

🌈 METAPHYSICAL TRADITIONS
In crystal and metaphysical traditions, Rainbow Obsidian is commonly associated with grounding, protection, emotional reflection, transformation and releasing unwanted emotional patterns. These associations are spiritual or folkloric traditions rather than scientifically established medical effects.
Because spheres radiate visually in every direction and can be viewed from multiple angles, they are popular for:
Meditation • Altar Displays • Crystal Collections • Home Décor • Scrying/Gazing • Spiritual Practices • Office Décor • Unique Gifts
💡 IMPORTANT RAINBOW SHEEN INFORMATION
Rainbow Obsidian can look nearly black under ordinary indoor lighting. Its purple, green, blue and rainbow layers become much more visible when the sphere is positioned under direct sunlight, a flashlight, spotlight or other concentrated light source.
The appearance will change as the sphere is rotated. This is a natural characteristic of Rainbow Obsidian and part of what makes every specimen unique. Retailers similarly note that lighting is used to reveal the rainbow effect in product photography.
🖤 NATURAL STONE DISCLAIMER
Rainbow Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass. Each sphere may contain natural inclusions, internal layers, tiny pits, surface marks, polish variations or other characteristics created during formation and hand polishing. These are not necessarily defects and help distinguish each specimen.
Colors may also appear slightly different depending on lighting, camera settings, monitor/device display and viewing angle.
You will receive the exact lettered sphere selected.
⚠️ CARE INSTRUCTIONS
Although Rainbow Obsidian measures approximately 5–5.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, it is volcanic glass and can chip or fracture if dropped or struck against a hard surface.
Handle carefully and keep away from edges where the sphere could roll and fall. Clean gently with a soft microfiber cloth and mild soap and water when necessary. Avoid abrasive cleaners.
